South Korea's KTF Reports 5 Million 3G Subscribers

South Korea's KT Freetel (KTF) has reportedly signed up its 5 millionth 3G subscriber - since the service launched 14 months ago. The company said that its 3G tariff, "Show" continues to draw subscribers at a rapid pace, adding more than 2 million users over the past four months. The net increase in "Show" users was 609,185 in March, the largest ever.

"Show has positioned itself as a leading 3G brand thanks to the love of 5 million customers," Cho Young-chu, CEO of KTF, said, "We will keep trying hard to be loved by 10 million customers."

The company is aiming for at least 7.7 million 3G users by the end of the year.

KTF is the country's second largest operator by subscriber numbers - and figures from the Mobile World show that the company ended Q1 '08 with some 13.9 million subscribers and a 31% market share.

Going back a bit to when more detailed information was available for comparison, at the end of last year, KTF reported 3.2 million WCDMA subscribers, compared to just under 2.7 million for SK Telecom. However, SK Telecom also reported that it had nearly 7.6 million CDMA2000 1x EV-DO at the same time.
