A study of male patents by the USA's Cleveland Clinic has found an association between the patients' cellphone use and their semen quality. The study was of 361 men at the hospital's infertility clinic who were quizzed about their mobile phone usage. The findings was published in the January 2008 issue of the medical journal Fertility and Sterility.
Men who used a phone for over four hours per day had the lowest semen counts.
The researchers are at pains to note though that semen quality may not be
affected by the mobile phones. As the men were already seeking fertility treatment, it is possible that the cellphone use linkage is simply a coincidence.
"Our results show a strong association of cell phone use with decreased semen quality. However, they do not prove a cause-and- effect relationship," lead researcher Dr. Ashok Agarwal told Reuters Health.
Further studies involve exposing semen samples to electromagnetic radiation from cell phones and monitoring the results to see if any changes are recorded. They also plan to carry out a replica of the current study, but involving a larger sample group.
