General Patent Corporation International (GPCI), a patent licensing and enforcement firm has announced a licensing agreement between its client, Digital Technology Licensing (DTL), and Nokia for a patent which affects the Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) codec used in GSM phones.
The agreement with Nokia constitutes the first major licensing deal for DTL, which owns the patent.
"We are very pleased to have arranged this agreement on behalf of our client, DTL," said Alexander Poltorak, GPCI's Chairman and CEO. "This license agreement is a resounding endorsement of our client's innovation and foresight."
The patented technology also provides backward compatibility, which allows cell phones to effectively communicate with older technology in existing cellular towers.
DTL is pursuing litigation with Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, Sprint/Nextel and Motorola for infringement of the DTL patent, titled Digital Output Transducer. The licensing agreements reached with Nokia did not involve litigation.
