
Albania's Albtelecom has selected Huawei as its major contractor for the construction of technical infrastructures of Eagle Mobile GSM Operator. According to the agreement, Huawei will construct a 3G-ready infrastucture for Eagle Mobile, which is going to be the first of its kind in Albania. Huawei is also committing that Eagle Mobile will be ready to operate in March, 2008.
Albtelecom and Eagle Mobile belong to a consortium made up of the Albanian State, Calik Group and Türk Telekom.
In the privatization process of Albanian Telecom, CT Telekom has taken over majority of shares of both Albtelecom and Eagle Mobile GSM operator. CT Telekom belongs to a consortium made up of Türk Telekom and CETEL, telecommunication company of Calik Enerji. CETEL has 80 percent of CT Telekom's company shares, while Türk Telekom is holding 20 percent.
According to figures from the Mobile World, Albania ended September with some 2.2 million mobile phone subscribers - representing a population penetration level of 61%.
