Sonaecom Selects Harris Stratex Networks for Network Upgrade

Harris Stratex Networks says that it has been selected by Portugal's Sonaecom to connect base station transceivers across northern Portugal. The deal will see the deployment of Harris Stratex Networks' Eclipse nodal wireless networking platform, and also includes a range of professional services, including network design, site surveys, installation, commissioning and training.

By deploying Eclipse, Sonaecom's mobile division, Optimus, will eliminate dependence on leased lines and will significantly lower their Ethernet and TDM traffic transport costs. The agreement will also see Sonaecom increase network efficiency by using the Eclipse advanced nodal capabilities to reduce the amount of equipment required and to deliver a smooth migration from TDM to Ethernet backhaul.

"The deal with Harris Stratex Networks enables us to reduce the operational costs of our Optimus mobile division while allowing us to introduce the very latest mobile Internet services," said Sonaecom's Chief Technology Officer, Jose Pinto Correia. "The flexibility of the Eclipse wireless networking platform and professional support services that Harris Stratex Networks is providing will allow us to continue to move toward offering carrier-class Ethernet Internet capabilities over a mobile network."
