Claro Launches 3G in Rio De Janeiro State

Brazil's third largest mobile operator Claro has extended its commercial 3G network to three municipalities in Rio de Janeiro state, local news service Agência Estado reported.

The service is available in the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro as well as Niterói and Macaé.

Claro, a unit of Mexico's América Móvil, launched 3G services in early November in the 850MHz band in capital BrasÃlia, Recife and Fortaleza and at the beginning of December added the cities of São Paulo and Porto Alegre.

The operator said recently it expects to participate in upcoming auctions for 3G spectrum. The government is scheduled to award 3G spectrum in the 1.9-2.1GHz range on December 18.

Claro ended October with a market share of 24.89%, according to figures by telecoms watchdog Anatel.
