Bangladesh's Grameenphone says that it has recently commissioned the 10,000th Base Station in its nationwide network, reaching a new milestone. The 10,000 Base Stations are located in about 5,700 sites around the country.
"Grameenphone is committed to provide quality service to its valued customers," says Grameenphone CEO Anders Jensen. "We are making continuous investments to further expand the coverage and enhance the capacity of the network to keep up with the rapid growth of subscribers."
The company says that it has so far invested over US$1.6 billion to build the network infrastructure since its inception in 1997. It has invested over US$450 million during the first three quarters of the current year while US$310 million was invested in 2006 alone.
Also, a number of steps are being taken to identify the problems spots in the network in order to constantly improve quality. Special efforts are being taken to constantly monitor and ensure network quality in the urban areas. In Dhaka and other major cities in-building coverage solutions and microcells have been deployed to provide improved coverage in important high-rise buildings and busy street junctions.
Coverage along major national highways has also been improved and the company has built the largest fiber optic cable network in the country with 2300 kilometers of fiber along the highways. It addition, it has leased from Bangladesh Railway another 2000 kilometers of fiber along the railway tracks.
Grameenphone is Bangladesh's largest operator by subscriber numbers. According to figures from the Mobile World database, the company had just over 15.1 million subscribers at the end of September - a market share of 49%.
