Mexico's largest mobile phone operator Telcel, a unit of América Móvil, has no problem interconnecting with digital trunking operator Nextel, local press reported América Móvil's CEO Daniel Hajj as saying.
On Monday telecoms regulator Cofetel set a 30-day deadline for fixed line incumbent Telmex to interconnect with cable operators and other telcos and gave mobile operators 10 days to interconnect with telco Opcom, which is a subsidiary of Nextel.
Besides Telcel, the country's mobile operators are Movistar of Telefónica, Iusacell and Unefón.
Nextel is the brand name under which US-based NII Holdings operates in Latin America.
Nextel has been battling for years to achieve interconnection with local mobile operators and despite previous orders from Cofetel, Nextel has to date only managed to interconnect SMS.
Mobile operators have argued that Nextel must first obtain a traditional mobile license before they will interconnect.
Once interconnected, Nextel will be able to offer services under the local and national calling party pays scheme and offer more competitive prices, Nextel Mexico's VP Gustavo Cantú was reported as saying.
"We've notified the operators of the conditions for interconnection and the
contract is ready to be signed. To date we have not received official
confirmation from any of them," Cantú said.
