Peru Mobile Penetration Forecast to Hit 60% in 2008

Mobile telephony penetration in Peru is expected to exceed 60% some time during 2008 compared to the current 48%, local daily Gestión reported the country's communications undersecretary Cayetana Aljovín as saying.

The government previously expected the penetration rate to hit 60% by 2011.

Aljovín also reportedly said that companies failing to implement number portability (NP) by 2010 will be subject to fines of up to 1.2mn soles (US$400,000) and could have their concession contracts rescinded.

On November 19, Peru's transport and communications ministry MTC issued a decree obliging mobile telephony operators to implement NP, and at no cost to subscribers as the government considers it a right for the user.
