MegaFon Launches 3G Network in St. Petersburg

Russian operator, MegaFon is reported to have launched the first part of its 3G network, in St. Petersburg - while MTS and VimpleCom are still testing their network deployment. A report in the RBC Daily newspaper said that the company plans to expand the network next year to all 16 regions.

The company has allocated US$1 billion for a 3 year rollout of the 3G network.

MegaFon ended the first half of this year with some 32.3 million subscribers according to figures from the Mobile World database - giving the company a market share of just over 20%.
