Ecuadorian mobile telephony operators ended July 2007 with 9.37mn subscribers compared to 7.73mn at end-July 2006, local telecoms supervisory body Suptel said in a statement.
Porta, a unit of Mexican giant America Movil, continued to lead the market with 6.32mn clients, followed by Movistar Ecuador, of Spain's Telefonica, with 2.64mn and locally owned Alegro PCS with 412,802 subscribers.
In July, Movistar asked local telecoms watchdog Conatel to establish a single method for measuring the country's mobile subscribers.
Each month, operators provide figures to Suptel detailing the number of subscribers they have and according to Movistar each company uses different measurement criteria, which makes it difficult to get a precise idea of the size of the market and the market share of each operator.
