Nokia Siemens Networks has announced plans to significantly increase its Chengdu Research and Development (R&D) capabilities by the end of 2008. Upon completion, it will be one of the biggest R&D centers for Nokia Siemens Networks worldwide.
The expanded facility, located in China's fourth largest city, will be a key global development center for applications development.
The company says that the move is part of its strategy to capture business opportunities and market share in emerging markets as demand rises for fixed and mobile infrastructure products, services and solutions. Nokia Siemens Networks is focusing on China and other emerging markets, which are the key drivers of future growth.
Nokia Siemens Networks Chief Executive Officer Simon Beresford-Wylie said: "China is one of the most dynamic telecommunications markets in the world, with continued fast growth and strong demand for advanced services. We will continue to act decisively to remain competitive in high growth markets like China. Our end-to-end converged product portfolio means we are perfectly positioned for long-term sustained growth in the telecommunications industry."
The Chengdu R&D Center was established in August 2005 to play a major role in 3G and IP-based multimedia systems (IMS) development. Since then it has been key in the development of mobile browsing, messaging and rich communication applications.
