Malaysia's telecoms regulator, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has warned that the use of cellphone jammers is illegal within the country, and that special permission is needed before anyone can import the hardware into the country.
The MCMC says that only authorised government bodies are permitted to use jammers and that, contrary to general perceptions - they cannot be casually installed inside public places such as mosques, lecture halls, courtrooms and meeting rooms.
Anyone caught using a jammer could face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to US$140,000.
