Etisalat hosted an event in Cairo last week, to celebrate the first 50 days of operations in Egypt. Etisalat Misr announced that it has neared a million customers since its launch. Etisalat won a 15 year, renewable license to provide both GSM and 3G mobile services in Egypt in July 2006. Etisalat owns 66 per cent of its Egyptian subsidiary, with the remainder divided amongst a consortium including Egypt Post with 20%, The National Bank of Egypt with 10%, Nabotha with 1.5% and finally the Commercial International Bank with 1%.
The market was a duopoly between Vodafone Egypt and Mobinil. The Mobile World database reports that the country ended Q1 '07 - just before Etisalat launched its network - with just over 20 million subscribers which represents a population penetration of 25%."
