The Venezuelan and Nicaraguan governments are studying creating a joint mobile telephony company in Nicaragua, Venezuelan mobile operator Movilnet's president Jacqueline Farías was reported as saying.
"We are evaluating a new joint company with Nicaragua so we can compete together with other companies there [Nicaragua]," Venezuelan daily El Universal reported the executive as saying. Farías said Movilnet expects to compete mainly with Mexican giant América Móvil.
América Móvil plans to invest US$250mn in Nicaragua in 2007-09 in fixed line, mobile and internet services, AMX's Nicaraguan fixed line incumbent Enitel said earlier this year in a statement.
Enitel will receive US$75mn in 2007 for upgrading fixed line, mobile and internet services.
The Venezuelan government sent last week a technical mission to Nicaragua to study the project in depth.
Meanwhile, Farías also said another priority of the Venezuelan government is to help Bolivian authorities develop the telecommunications sector.
Movilnet is the mobile unit of Venezuelan incumbent operator Cantv."
