Ericsson Expects to Double Partners to 20 for IMS Expert Center

The Brazilian unit of Swedish telecoms equipment supplier Ericsson expects to double its developer partners for its IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) expert center to 20 in the next six months, Alexandre Borin, Ericsson mobility world director, told BNamericas.

Ericsson, which inaugurated its IMS expert center in São Paulo on May 23, already works with local developers such as research and development company CPqD and payment solutions provider EverMobile who are using the center.

The center, which is Ericsson's third worldwide, is to be used by Ericsson and developers to plan, test and implement IMS applications for operators and media companies in Latin America.

So far Ericsson's Brazilian unit has not seen revenues from IMS, but the unit expects to have at least one commercial contract this year, Borin said.

"All of the biggest operators, 5-7 companies, have plans for IMS and are doing tests," he said. "It is a hot issue."

Borin expects to see local telecoms operators launching IMS services in 1-2 months.

"The most common service is likely to be call continuity which allows a seamless handover between WiFi hotspots and GSM devices," he said.

The takeoff of IMS applications will really happen in two years, he said."
