Network Outage Caused by NGN Upgrade

A network upgrade over the weekend at Bahrain's Batelco ran into problems, when the network suffered a shut-down in parts of the capital city, Manama. The disruption followed a migration to a New Generation Network (NGN), Batelco said in a statement.

The local Gulf Daily News reported that the outage took in part of central Manama, King Faisal Highway, Seef area, Karbabad, most of Budaiya Highway and villages, Hamala and A'ali.

An influential business source told the newspaper that "a company with nearly BD100 million net profit should have a back-up service because what happened affected the communications of thousands of mobile owners. This is not acceptable nowadays," he said

Batelco ended last year with just under an estimated 600,000 subscribers, according to data from the Mobile World. That gives the operator a market share of 72% in the country. "
