China Government Sets Industry Standards For 3G Technology

BEIJING -(Dow Jones)- China's Ministry of Information Industry said Wednesday it has set the technical specifications for two third-generation mobile-phone technologies developed abroad, bringing China one step closer to issuing 3G licenses.

In a statement on its Web site, the ministry said the standards for WCDMA and CDMA2000, together with that for a locally developed 3G technology issued earlier, will provide clarity on developing products and services based on these technologies.

In early 2006, the ministry issued the standard for the locally developed Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (T-SCDMA) technology.

While the standards issued Wednesday bring China a step closer to 3G licensing, discussions over industry restructuring are likely to hold up the issuance of licenses.
