Mexican mobile operator Movistar is testing a UMTS 3G network in Monterrey but must wait for authorities to auction mobile spectrum in the 1900MHz band to test the same service in Mexico City (DF), local press reported.
Without a timely auction of spectrum, the company, owned by Spain's Telefónica, could fall behind competitors in the launch of 3G services across the country, Movistar México's general manager Miguel Menchén said.
Telecommunications regulator Cofetel said in late March it plans to auction concession licenses this year in the 3.4-3.7GHz band for wireless broadband services for WiMax but as yet has made no mention of auctioning 3G spectrum."
