
Shipments of mobile phones in Japan rose for the second month in a row according to figures from the local trade group, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association. Shipments increased by 1.3%, driven largely by a surge of 14% in 3G capable handsets. Shipments totaled 4.93 units in February.
Shipments of 2G handsets collapsed by 93 percent to 41,000 units in February.
Shipments of PHS handsets surged in February, after local operator - Willcom introduced four new models earlier in the year. In total, 172,000 new handsets were sold in February, representing a rise of 9.1 percent. There are now around 4.9 million PHS subscribers in Japan. DoCoMo has said that it plans to shut down its own PHS network later this year - although Willcom is showing signs of strong growth in the medical market, where lower radio emissions are reported to be preferable near medical equipment."
