Suriname's state owned telecoms operator Telesur has deployed a real-time billing solution and SMS service platform provided by US billing and telecoms software solutions provider Comverse, the latter said in a statement.
The platform is designed for prepaid mobile subscribers and also allows the telco to apply billing segmentation for its SMS service for subscribers on its GSM network.
Telesur, formerly the incumbent telecoms provider for Suriname, needed the solution following the liberalization of the market and entry of mobile operators Digicel and Intelsure in August 2006, Comverse's GM and VP for Latin America Javier Jiménez told BNamericas.
"They were preparing for the competition... they decided they needed to be much more competitive since they had been the incumbent for so many years," he said.
According to Jiménez, the company has between 300,000 and 350,000 subscribers on its network and also provides fixed line and internet services."
