Reuters Offers Free Videos to Mobile Phones

The news agency, Reuters has announced the launch of the first free, ad-supported mobile news video service in the USA, making it the first major news organization in the U.S. to offer such a service to mobile phones.

The service is available to consumers through the Reuters mobile site and it contains breaking news and business video segments optimized for select smart phones such as the Nokia E62, Palm 700w, and Blackberry Pearl.

Up to now, consumers who wanted to watch news video on their mobile phones had to purchase it through carriers' own video catalogs.

"Adding video to our mobile site offers users a one-stop shop for all things Reuters on their mobile phones," said Stephen Smyth, General Manager, Reuters Media.

Smyth adds that Reuters will begin selling pre-roll advertising on mobile video in early 2007. "We've seen an enormous increase in traffic to our mobile site in 2006 and have successfully sold mobile advertising to blue chip advertisers. The opportunities for mobile video advertising are very exciting as consumers adopt more sophisticated phones that support video."
