VimpelCom Gets Permission to Launch Network in Chechnya

MOSCOW, Oct 11 (Prime-Tass) -- The Federal Communications Agency has granted permission to Russia?s second largest mobile operator VimpelCom to launch its network in the constituent republic of Chechnya, Nikolai Onufriyev, VimpelCom's North Caucuses branch director, told Prime-Tass Thursday.

VimpelCom plans to start operations in the region in early 2007, he said.

VimpelCom holds a mobile services license for the republic until 2016 and the necessary frequencies for operation, Onufriyev said.

At the moment Russia?s third largest mobile operator, MegaFon, is the only mobile service provider in the politically unstable North Caucasian republic and provides services to about 300,000 subscribers. Local authorities have recently criticized MegaFon for high tariffs and reportedly poor quality of service.
