Movistar Launches SMS Service

Argentine mobile operator Movistar, a unit of Spanish giant Telefónica, has launched a service aimed at allowing subscribers to make payments through short message service (SMS), the company said in a statement.

Through this service, Movistar's clients will be able to buy products and pay for services. The total amount for purchases will be debited to a client credit account or added to the monthly bill.

Movistar also announced local subscribers can now use the Blackberry handset in more than 80 countries thanks to a global GPRS roaming agreement between TEF and Canadian wireless equipment provider Research in Motion (RIM), the owner of the Blackberry brand.

Blackberry services enable access to email, instant messaging, wireless internet connections and corporate networks.

Movistar Argentina recorded a total client base of 9.48 million at the end of the 1H06, up 40.9% compared to 6.73 million recorded in the same period last year.
