Argentine mobile operator CTI Móvil, a unit of Mexico's América Móvil, and Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia have deployed a GSM network in Argentina's Marambio base on the Antarctic Peninsula, CTI Móvil said in a statement.
Civil and military personnel will now be able to remain in contact with their families through the use of 10 lines and equipment provided by CTI. These users will have access to standard mobile phone functions such as the taking and sending of photos and text messages, surfing the internet and receiving emails.
Nokia provided the base with an UltraSite EDGE BTS cell, to allow GSM communications.
CTI Móvil has installed 246 new antennas in the first half of 2006 in most of the country's provinces.
The company's GSM network has 2,600 antennas nationwide offering mobile telephony coverage in nearly 2,050 cities and villages.

The average temperatures at the base are 1 °C during the summer, and −21 °C during the winter, though strong winds can lower the apparent temperature down to −60 °C.
In winter the base has an average of 55 crew members, but in summer the population of the base can grow to 150."
