PRESS: China's Huawei to Supply Fiber Equip to VimpelCom's URS

MOSCOW, Aug 25 (Prime-Tass) -- Chinese telecommunications equipment producer Huawei is expected to supply equipment for the fiber optic network of Ukrainian Radiosystems, or URS, a subsidiary of Russia?s second largest mobile operator VimpelCom, URS' General Director Sergei Mironov said, Russian business daily Vedomosti reported Friday.

Huawei won the contract in a tender. No financial details of the contract were available. Analyst at iKS-Consulting, Konstantin Ankilov, estimated the deal to be worth U.S. $10 million to $20 million, Vedomosti said.

Huawei earlier lost another tender to supply base stations and other network equipment to URS to Swedish telecommunications equipment producer Ericsson. The Swedish company was awarded a $200 million 2-year contract. Prior to being bought by VimpelCom in November 2005, URS used Huawei's network equipment. URS is currently dismantling Huawei's network equipment.

Huawei supplies mobile telecommunications equipment to VimpelCom for its networks in Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, an executive of Huawei's representative office in the Commonwealth of Independent States said, the daily reported.

URS operates a network covering 245 Ukrainian cities and towns. The operator has a 1.6% share of the country's mobile telecommunication market, according to its previous reports. The number of URS? active subscribers rose to 682,000 as of Aug 1 from about 273,000 as of January 1.
