Half of UK Phones Have Cameras

The number of MMS-capable, camera-ready handsets currently in use across the UK now exceeds 33.5 million. The Mobile Data Association (MDA) confirmed these latest statistics to indicate the extent to which phones can now take pictures and send/receive multimedia messages. This represents more than 50% of the 67 million handsets in use in the UK today.

Not all users have set up their handsets to utilise picture messaging, and whilst the UK's network operators have made inroads into achieving this for their customers, this exciting new technology still has much more potential - did you know, for example, that an MMS message can include 1000 characters, as well as voice, picture and video clips, and that costs of MMS messages can often be included within SMS bundles?

In response, the MDA has launched an MMS Campaign to encourage people to get started with picture messaging, which includes the publishing of generic 'how to' information on its messaging website, www.text.it/picturemessaging. Users will be able to find information on how to set up their phones to send and receive picture messages, troubleshooting tips, FAQ's, and even links to online photo libraries where your pictures can be viewed by people without camera phones."
