HONG KONG -(Dow Jones)- China Mobile, the Hong Kong-listed unit of China's largest mobile carrier by subscribers, said Thursday it added 4.44 million customers in June, up from 4.37 million new subscribers in May.
The increase in June was the company's largest since it started reporting monthly operating figures in January 2003.
The carrier said 4.15 million of its new customers in June were prepaid subscribers, while 291,000 were contract customers.
The June additions raised China Mobile's total number of subscribers to 273.79 million.
China Mobile's smaller rival, China Unicom Ltd. (CHU), said Wednesday it added 1.14 million subscribers in June, bringing its total mobile customers to 135.09 million.
