Public Affairs Company (PAC) of Sioux Falls says that it has resigned with immediate effect from acting as the campaign management firm supporting Verizon Wireless in its initiative to repeal the gross receipts tax (GRT) on wireless services.
The firm cites significant differences in opinion with its client on how and when to wage the campaign. Verizon Wireless has been the firm's client since April.
Mike Knuth, Vice President for External Affairs for Public Affairs Company had been acting as Verizon Wireless' advocate. Prior to joining PAC, Mike worked for GlaxoSmithKline as Senior Executive Pharmaceutical Consultant.
Just before PAC was retained by Verizon Wireless to fight the gross receipts tax, the US government had repealed the Federal Excise Tax. Imposed by President William McKinley in 1898 to help fund the Spanish-American War, the Federal Excise Tax was originally a luxury tax, at a time when only wealthy Americans had phones. The war lasted only four months, but the "Tax on Talk" remained for more than 107 years. "
