Malaysia's Time dotCom says that it has commenced a 3G pilot trial, following its success in the recent 3G spectrum award. The primary objective of the trial is to test the performance of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) - a next generation 3G technology. In particular, the trial will assess how an HSDPA network behaves given different demand patterns. The results from the trial will provide important input to TIME's planning process including validation of the proposed commercial strategy and product offering.
The trial meets a commitment made by TIME to the telecoms regulator, the MCMC as part of its successful bid submission.
To ensure that the trial is conducted expediently and effectively, two vendors (Huawei and Alcatel) have been called upon to assist TIME in achieving the trial objectives. However, TIME remains committed to working closely with other vendors throughout the entire process. In particular, the procurement process will involve a wider set of vendors and will not be limited to just Alcatel and Huawei.
The trial is scheduled to run for at least three months, from mid-May, over the Golden Triangle area around Kuala Lumpur.
Following the trial, TIME will issue a full request for proposal to vendors."
