
China's Huawei has announced that VimpelCom had recently awarded a commercial contract to Huawei to build the UMTS/GSM network for Tajikistan. According to the contract, Huawei will provide a unified 2G/3G Softswitch Core Network, New Generation Node B and related service platforms to build a UMTS/GSM network covering the whole country for TaCom, a subsidiary of VimpelCom in Tajikistan.
With more than 50 million subscribers in Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan, VimpelCom is a leading mobile operator that has previously deployed Huawei's advanced mobile solutions in its networks serving these markets.
VimpelCom acquired a 60% interest in Tacom for US$12 million in December 2005. Tacom holds national GSM-900/1800, UMTS, CDMA 450 and AMPS licenses."
