Cambodia's Prime Minister, Hun Sen is proposing a law which will ban the use of video calls on 3G handsets in the country. The move was prompted by an online petition which had also been signed by the Prime Minister's wife who feared that the video phones would harm the nations moral code.
Hun Sen said Cambodia should wait 10 years before allowing video phones.
"I have written to the Minister of Telecommunications to delay the use of certain mobile phones," Hun Sen told an assembly of Buddhist monks in Phnom Penh last week. "Hold it," he told his audience. "Do not yet start the mobile phone services through which the callers can see each others' images. Maybe we can wait for another 10 years or so until we have done enough to strengthen the morality of our society."
Alcatel has recently been awarded a contract to deploy a 3G network for local operator, CamGSM. Established in 1996, CamGSM Company operates a GSM 900 and 1800 mobile network in Cambodia under the trade name of MobiTel. CamGSM is jointly owned by a Cambodian consortium, the Royal Group, and Millicom International."
