Spain's Telefónica Móviles saw its Latin American revenues grow 35% in the first quarter compared to 1Q05, reaching 2.17bn euros (US$2.78bn), TEM said in a statement.
Latin America accounted for half of the group's revenues last quarter, whereas the region contributed 44% of TEM's total consolidated revenues in the first quarter of 2005.
TEM highlighted a positive service revenue performance in the region, which increased 36%, boosted by strong growth in outgoing revenues, which outpaced customer growth.
The contribution of Latin American subsidiaries to TEM's operating income before interest, depreciation and amortization (Oibda) grew to represent 37% of the total, compared to 26% in 1Q05. Oibda at these subsidiaries grew 57% year-over-year to 554mn euros.
The group's operators in Latin America recorded net adds of over 3.5 million, driven mostly by the rollout of new GSM networks during the past year, which drove the total regional customer base to 74 million, a 25% increase compared to 1Q05.
Postpaid users increased 19.4% to reach 13.5 million, while the prepaid client base reached 59.5 million, up 27% compared to 1Q05.
