MOSCOW, April 25 (Prime-Tass) -- Georgia's National Communications Commission plans to auction licenses for third generation (3G) mobile services on May 23, the commission said Tuesday.
The starting price of the license amounts to 8.5 million lari, the commission said.
The commission is auctioning frequencies from 1,950 Megahertz (MHz) to 1,965 MHz, from 2,010 MHz to 2,015 MHz, and from 2,140 MHz to 2,155 MHz.
The deadline for applications to be received is May 8.
The commission said that it would not provide more than 50% of the auctioned frequencies to one bidding company.
The Georgian mobile market is split between two GSM operators and one CDMA operator. GSM operators Geocell and Magticom control about 55% and 44% of the market respectively, while CDMA operator Iberiatel controls about 1%.
Penetration in Georgia, which has a population of about 5 million people, amounted to about 20% as of early 2006.
