Ukraine's UMC Investments Soar to $676 Million in 2005

KIEV, Mar 28 (Prime-Tass) -- The investments of Ukrainian Mobile Communications (UMC), Ukraine's second largest mobile operator, soared to U.S. $676 million in 2005 from $282 million in 2004, the company's General Director Adam Voyatsky told reporters Tuesday.

Of the total, UMC invested $324 million in October-December 2005, Voyatsky said.

UMC launched 1,566 base stations in 2005, increasing its total number of base stations to 5,383 as of December 31, Voyatsky said. Of the total, 888 base stations were launched in October-December 2005, he added.

UMC also increased the number of switchboards to 26 as of late 2005 from 15 as of late 2004, Voyatsky said. In 2005 the company increased its network coverage to 91% of Ukraine's territory from 87% as of late 2004.

UMC is 100% owned by Russia?s largest mobile phone operator Mobile TeleSystems (MTS).

The total subscriber base of UMC rose 80.7% in 2005 to 13.327 million users as of December 31, 2005. The net profit of UMC rose 44.9% on the year to $324 million in 2005.
