Nextel Asks Cofetel to Rescind Operators' Licenses on SMS Spat

Mexican trunking operator Nextel has asked telecommunications regulator Cofetel to rescind the mobile concessions contracts of three mobile operators due to their failure to follow a Cofetel order to allow SMS interconnection, local daily Milenio reported.

Telefónica Móviles, which operates under the Movistar brand, was the only company to obey the order by the March 12 deadline.

Telcel, owned by América Móvil, and Iusacell were granted temporary suspension orders that exempted them from interconnecting until the courts resolve their injunctions against the interconnection order. The fourth operator Unefon did not obtain such an order.

"We have presented to Cofetel today [Mar 14] a written petition in which we mention that the obligation to interconnect with Nextel was not met and we ask them to take actions," Nextel's vice president Gustavo Cantú said.

Telcel, Iusacell and Unefon have argued that they should not be obliged to interconnect with Nextel because it does not hold a traditional mobile telephony concession license, but rather a trunking license.

Nextel is owned by US holding company NII Holdings.
