PTT Will Become the New 3G Hotspot - Report

Analysys International predicts that PTT (push-to-talk) will become the new hotspot of 3G applications with user numbers to reach 8 million by year 2009 in its newly released focus report. It also says that the barrier of interconnection will be removed gradually, as the user numbers keep increasing rapidly as well as points out the strategies for carriers to grasp the opportunity.

As China Telecom and China Netcom have increased promotions of PTT service base on 3G-network, the user numbers will increase rapidly. This will result in the involvement of regulatory organizations and eventually lead to interconnection.

Analysys International has given a prediction on the market of PTT over cellular. According to its study, PTT users will be around only 2 million from 2005 to the end of 2007 as the PTT service is still undergoing a startup phase. But from December 2007 to 2008, the service will enter a developing phase of fast growth, and users will soon reach a scale of 6 million. Then the maturing phase will come, users can reach about 8 million at the end of 2009.

''We have found out that the vogue users among individual clients are the premier target clients for PTT service. Carriers can therefore position entertainment functions as the focus for operation and promotion. It is predicable that ARPU will increase 12% when PTT becomes a large volume application among low-middle end individual clients," says Zhou Yi, an analyst from Analysys International, ''Demands from business clients are still not high, so carriers should set current strategy as focusing on individual users while cultivating business client market step by step.''"
