The USA based cellphone recycling firm, ReCellular says that they have collected their 10 millionth phone in company history. The phone, a Motorola StarTac 6500 collected through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program, marked a milestone in the handling of retired cell phones in North America. In addition, ReCellular announced that the charitable phone collection programs they manage have sent more than US$15 million to charities since 1999.
"ReCellular is extremely proud to have made this contribution to worthy charities and to our environment," said Chuck Newman, president of ReCellular. "Our focus on servicing the largest companies in the wireless industry has propelled us to this market-leading position. That focus will allow us to prevent tens of millions of phones from entering our landfills for years to come."
The 1999 launch of the Wireless Foundation's Donate a Phone program marked the starting point for what is now a global enterprise. ReCellular brings in phones from more than 40,000 drop-off locations across the United States and Canada through their partnerships with Motorola, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, Best Buy, the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation, Bell Mobility, and many, many others.
Verizon Wireless, a recognized corporate leader in the fight against domestic violence, began its HopeLine recycling program in 2001, and phones collected through HopeLine account for more than 15 percent of the total phones collected by ReCellular to date. Proceeds from the refurbishment and resale of phones donated to HopeLine benefit victims of domestic violence and non-profit advocacy agencies across the country, providing essential communication tools of wireless phones and wireless services, as well as financial grants."
