Cellular Backhaul Market Will Nearly Double by 2009

Point-to-point microwave vendors will enjoy a market increasing by billions of dollars in the oncoming years due to the growth of key and emerging PTP application segments, a new Visant Strategies study has found.

The wireless explosion across the globe and the anticipated transition to Internet/Protocol- based mobile systems in the near future bodes well for the point-to-point (PTP) microwave industry, according to the study. Mobile wireless backhaul, the largest segment served currently by the PTP microwave industry, will be a key driver as annual revenues for PTP overall will grow from US$4 billion in 2004 to US$7 billion in 2009, the report finds.

"This is still an industry that has legs," said study author Dan Sweeney. "While it is less glamorous than the newer point-to-multipoint systems, which have seen great early acclaim due to WiMAX, PTP has stood the test of time and still remains a wise technology choice for many reasons, with the main reason being its relatively cheap cost for the efficiency it allows."

"Mobile operators worldwide still need PTP microwave to make their systems more cost efficient as they ramp up towards an IP-based data and voice network meant to raise their average revenue per user, and PTP still offers them a valuable tool," said Visant Strategies Project Director Larry Swasey.

Other PTP microwave market segments that are emerging include enterprise applications, broadcast, public safety and last-mile use, the report finds. Also, trunking applications, second only to mobile backhaul in shipments for the PTP industry, will also increase in value despite competition from fiber in that space."
