No Hard Evidence Mobile Phones Harm Health - UK Report

LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Although the number of mobile phones being used by U.K. consumers continue to rise, there is still no hard evidence that the health of the public is being adversely affected by the use of technology according to a report published Tuesday by the National Radiological Protection Board, or NRPB.

However, the report warned that uncertainties remain and a continued precautionary approach to mobile phone use is recommended until more information is available - especially regarding children's use of the technology.

NRPB Chairman William Stewart said in the report; "The fact is that the widespread use of mobile phones is a relatively recent phenomenon and it is possible that adverse health effects could emerge after years of prolonged use."

The number of mobile phones used in the U.K. has doubled since 2000 with over 50 million in use in the country.

The NRPB said that particular attention should be paid to minimizing exposure to children and other potentially vulnerable groups sensitive to radio-waves.

In line with its precautionary approach, the NRPB recommended for ready access to information related to mobile phones and masts and that the planning process associated with putting up mobile phone base stations be subject to an independent review.

It also said the potential exposure from third-generation, or 3G, base stations should be continually monitored and said a formal inspection procedure should be set in place to ensure exclusion zones around base stations are clearly identified.

Information on the specific energy absorption rates of different mobile phones should also be made available to consumers, the NRPB said.

The NRPB is a government-appointed agency which investigates issues related to protecting citizens from radiation hazards.

The report published Tuesday updates a previous report published in 2000 by the U.K. Independent Expert Group on Mobile Phones and Health.

The NRPB said a continuing research program on the possible health effects of mobile phone technologies should be strongly supported.
