Wireless Service Subscribers In US Up 14.5% - CTIA

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Subscribers to wireless services in the U.S. increased by 14.5% in the 12-month period that ended in June, the trade group CTIA-The Wireless Association said Monday.

Total wireless subscribership increased by over 21 million between June 2003 and June 2004, CTIA said in its semi-annual survey, pushing total subscribership to over 170 million. Use of wireless minutes grew by 35%.

"Wireless communication continues to grow at a rapid pace," CTIA President and Chief Executive Steve Largent said in a release. "Not only are more people choosing to join the Wireless network, but those customers are also choosing to spend more time on the expanding wireless network."

Capital spending in the sector was up $22.5 billion, or 16.8%, to $156 billion over the same period, according to CTIA, while employment increased 13.4% to 212,186.
