Phone Explodes in Hong Kong

Another Nokia phone has apparently exploded in Hong Kong. Local TV channels showed the Nokia 3310 in pieces and a spokesperson for Nokia said that the company would investigate the cause of the explosion.

"I was just calling my boss to say I would be returning to work a few minutes late, and when I pressed the button to hang up, the phone was suddenly flying everywhere,'' the man told ATV.

"We've been in contact with the police. It's confirmed that it was a Nokia phone," the Nokia spokeswoman said. "We're trying to get hold of the product for technical testing. But as we haven't got hold of the product yet, we can't provide further information at the moment," she concluded.

There have been several reports of Nokia phones exploding over the past few months, although they have always been attributed to 3rd party supplied batteries.

The handset in this situation was apparently purchased as a second-hand phone."
