Egypt's MobiNil says that it has deployed more tree-like antennas in a number of new sites in Cairo, Alexandria as well as highways and tourist resorts. The company has also obtained an official renewal of the ISO 14001.
ISO 14001 was first awarded to MobiNil in 2001 by TUV certification body of Germany for adopting and successfully implementing an environmental management system (EMS) that provides high quality & safe mobile service conforming to Egypt's safety regulations as well as to the international telecommunication standards which ensure maximum environmental protection for the local community.
The conclusion of the second surveillance audit, held by TUV Germany July 2003, is that MobiNil's environmental management system (EMS) was effectively maintained with continual improvements in many areas where environmental programs are being carried out.
In response to the requirements of the certificate, MobiNil last year installed the first artificial antenna tree in one of its Alexandria sites, thus becoming the first telecom operator in the Middle East to set an example for reconciling technology with the beauty of nature.
"We are keen to deploy these antennas, which are environment-friendly and also beautiful. It is important that big corporations combat optic pollution," commented Osman Sultan, MobiNil's CEO.
Also in compliance with the environment management system (EMS), MobiNil in 2002 established an Environment Office with the responsibility of receiving and handling all health and environmental issues related to the mobile industry."
