Bangladeshi Network Celebrates One Million Subscribers

The sixth Annual GrameenPhone Distribution Conference was held recently at Hotel Seagull in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. "With the help and support of our Distribution Partners, we have managed to reach the one million subscriber base within 6 years into operation", Ola Ree, Managing Director of GrameenPhone Ltd., said during the inaugural session of the conference.

The inaugural session was also addressed by Mehboob Chowdhury, Director Sales and Marketing of GrameenPhone, while an address of welcome was delivered by Mahboob Hossain, Additional General Manager of Distribution Department.

The Theme of this year's GP Distribution Conference 2003 was "Together, we stand beyond million". Some 600 representatives of GP Dealers, Agent Outlets, Individual Agents and Distributors of Scratch Cards around the country attended the day long conference.

GrameenPhone presently has some 400 Point of Sale (POS) outlets and 6000 Scratch Card Retail outlets in all six divisions of the country. The present subscriber base of GP is more than one million with network coverage in 58 districts.

During the address, the Managing Director conveyed the appreciation of the shareholders for Distribution Partners' support in achieving one million subscribers. Ola Ree said that to retain its market leadership, GP will continuously launch innovative new products and services catered to the local needs which will also bring greater business benefit for the Distribution Partners. He noted that the GP Distribution Partners will also have to become more innovative in their sales activities for which GP and its 700 employees will provide full support.

Mehboob Chowdhury in his address thanked the Distribution Partners' for their support in achieving one million subscribers by August this year and urged them to continue their good efforts in the future. The working sessions of the conference also included presentations on GrameenPhone, Telenor, Distribution, GP's products and services, the new automated Sales Administration System (SAS) and GSM technology. The participants were also informed about GP's Health, Safety and Environmental issues.

GP Dealers, Agent Outlets, Individual Agents and Distributors were recognized for their performance in 2002. GrameenPhone Dealer "Mobile Mart", Agent Outlet "Telesens" of Dhaka, and M. A. Razzak, "Individual Agent" of Dhaka, were recognized for their outstanding performance on national level. "Grameen Telecom", one of the oldest dealers of GrameenPhone, also received the "Community Award".

Ahmed Mahfuzur Rahman of Mobile Mart, Mehboob Zaman Chowdhury of Monalisa International and Md. Nizam Uddin, Individual Agent, were recognized as Best Communicators with GrameenPhone for the year 2002.

In addition, the best performing regional/divisional Dealer Outlets, Outlet Agents, Individual Agents and EASY Pre-Paid Scratch Card Distributors from each of the six divisions across the country were also awarded.

The day-long conference concluded with a colorful cultural program. Along with local guests and GP's Distribution Partners, senior officials of GrameenPhone also attended the conference."
