The WiMAX Forum is aiming to have its next standard completed and ready for network deployment by the start of 2012. WiMAX 2, formally known as 802.16m promises to offer average downlink speeds of more than 100Mbps to users, compared to peak download speeds of 100Mbps for LTE networks.

Declan Byrne, the marketing director for the WiMax Forum industry group told Network World that the new standard will be finalized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) this November, with an eye toward certifying devices based on the standard throughout 2011. Commercial launches should follow shortly after than.

The new 802.16m standard will also be compatible with the current 802.16e, which should help ease the upgrade path.
