South Korea's LTE subscriber base is expected to have passed the 30 million mark last month, according to data released by the government.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning had said that the subscriber base stood at 29.4 million at the end of January, and based on market expectations should have reached 30.2 million at the end of Fenruary.

SK Telecom had 13.9 million 4G customers, followed by KT Corp with 8.2 million and LG U+ with 7.2 million 4G customers.

The number of LTE subscribers in the country originally passed the 10 million mark in August 2012 and breached 20 million in April 2013.

The country has a population of around 50 million, and an estimated 80% of its smartphone users are now using LTE capable devices.

Subscriber growth may stall for the next few months though, as the regulator is imposing a ban on new sign-ups by the networks as punishment for exceeding handset subsidy limits.
