IBM is to develop a range of business apps exclusively for Apple devices under a new agreement that sees Apple making a major effort to expand into the corporate device market.
The deal will see IBM develop a new class of more than 100 industry-specific enterprise solutions including native apps, developed exclusively from the ground up, for iPhone and iPad.
The first apps being developed by IBM are expected to become available starting this autumn, with the majority due in 2015.
IBM will also off cloud services optimized for iOS, including device management, security, analytics and mobile integration, while Apple will set up customer care facilities aimed at corporate users.
As part of the agreement, IBM will also sell iPhones and iPads with the industry-specific solutions to business clients worldwide. IBM will also offer device activation and management services for iPhone and iPad, with leasing options.
"Mobility -- combined with the phenomena of data and cloud -- is transforming business and our industry in historic ways, allowing people to re-imagine work, industries and professions," said Ginni Rometty, IBM Chairman, President and CEO. "This alliance with Apple will build on our momentum in bringing these innovations to our clients globally, and leverages IBM's leadership in analytics, cloud, software and services."
