Cloud-Based Apps Need Cloud-Based Performance Monitoring

More and more applications are moving into the cloud, forcing companies to strongly consider ensuring the quality of their cloud applications via testing services, according to Heavy Reading.

"As increasing numbers of applications are moved into the cloud, the need for cloud-based performance testing becomes more evident," says Denise Culver, research analyst with Heavy Reading Insider and author of the report. "More and more companies are being forced to acknowledge the reality that ensuring the quality of their cloud services is a vital move."

There is no question that performance testing is a vital part of the development life cycle, and that is a very real factor when developing cloud services, Culver says. "There are too many examples that exist that illustrate the loss of revenue that occurs when proper testing is not done early in the development cycle," she continues. "As the cloud becomes more prolific in the marketplace and more vendors turn to it to take advantage of its many benefits, cloud testing vendors have a responsibility to educate them about the benefits of proper testing."

Key findings:

  • By using cloud testing, as opposed to other types of testing, users gain agility because they aren't tied to certain software, freeing them to switch to another vendor at any time.
  • With the increase in data services, especially within the mobile environment, the volume of data generated by the average mobile service provider increases by about 30 percent per year.
  • A significant geographic driver for the next 18-24 months will be the rapid adoption of cloud services across multiple constituents and the associated requirement to deliver excellent user experiences.
  • Growing sophistication of service-level agreements will drive increased need for monitoring and assurance solutions end-to-end.
