BlackBerry Closes German Mobile Gaming App Team

Note -- this news article is more than a year old.

BlackBerry is closing down a German division, Scoreloop, which helped mobile developers manage billing functions in their apps.

BlackBerry acquired Scoreloop in 2011 to make it easier for its app developers to work on mobile gaming services, but the company is now seen to be focusing more on corporate users, leaving the division looking as anomaly within the company.

Scoreloop will "discontinue its services as of Dec. 1," a BlackBerry spokeswoman said in a statement. "This decision aligns with BlackBerry's strategy to focus developer efforts on delivering the best enterprise solutions for customers."

The move follows a recent decision by Blackberry to sell another German R&D facility to Volkswagen last week.

BlackBerry has also recently laid off internal staff who were developing consumer apps, while beefing up its corporate apps division.
