Mexico Expected to See Two New Mobile Networks

Note -- this news article is more than a year old.

The Mexican telecoms market will receive two new mobile operators, and one of them will be European, a Mexican trade group, Canieti has predicted.

The other player will offer services in the Mexican market with the purchase of assets that America Movil is planning to sell off to avoid swinging regulatory burdens on its network.

Canieti's President, Victor Gutierrez said that the unnamed European company was already in talks with Mexican partners, although he did not elaborate on who they are or when a deal might be announced.

Orange and Telecom Italia have explicitly ruled out an expansion into Mexico.

Duetsche Telekom looks like a possible contender as it will be cash rich from the expected sale of a majority of its stake in T-Mobile USA, while the entry of T-Mobile into Mexico would benefit the US network in cross-selling to families and businesses operating in both countries.
